How to Make a Gummy Bear Healthy

Tired of your kids grabbing for those sweet little sugar-filled snacks in the grocery store check-out lanes? You know the ones I’m talking about. Or how about the aisles of fruit snacks with their favorite characters posted on the front of the box? They are everywhere and kids love them! But if you take a quick peek at the ingredients, chances are you probably won’t recognize any of them. Besides sugar… There are no nutritional benefits to those foods, trust me…even if they boast they are made with real fruit, fat free, and contain antioxidants. The process by which companies label and market their products is flawed and, most of the time, is not true. (We can get into that in another post.)

I decided to find a way to make my own gummies at home because let’s face it…they’re fun! But I wanted to know exactly what was going in them. I wanted to make sure they were free of any unheard-of ingredients and most importantly, added sugars.

It turns out that these cute little guys are not only tasty, but healthy! And despite what you’re probably thinking, they are super easy to make and a great way to involve your kids in the kitchen. I’ve found the more involved they are in preparing the food, the more likely they are to try it!


Kitchen Tools You’ll Need:

  • Small saucepan
  • Whisk
  • Silicone candy molds
  • Dropper

This is the exact set I purchased from Amazon. It was very affordable and came with 2 droppers as well as some other shapes besides the gummy bear molds.


Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup fruit juice of your choice

For the purple bears, I used organic 100% Concord grape juice. For the red/pink bears, I used 100% red tart cherry juice (not from concentrate). For the clear bears, I used 100% pineapple juice (not from concentrate). For the orange bears, I used Lakewood Organic Golden Roots fresh pressed juice (I found it with the other juices at Whole Foods and it was made from apples, sweet potatoes, golden beets, carrots, and turmeric…I wanted it to be orange!).


Directions:

  1. Add all ingredients to a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk continuously until mixture is warm and gelatin powder has dissolved completely.
  3. Remove from heat and use dropper to fill molds with liquid.
  4. Place in refrigerator to set. Gummy bears take about 15 minutes. If you use larger shapes or deeper molds allow extra time to set. You can place them in the freezer to speed up the set time, but make sure you watch them closely so they do not freeze completely.
  5. Once set, pop out of molds and enjoy!

  • 1 tbsp organic honey

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to small saucepan over medium heat.
  • Whisk continuously until mixture is warm and gelatin powder has dissolved completely.
  • Remove from heat and use dropper to fill molds with liquid.
  • Place in refrigerator to set for at least 15 minutes.
  • Once, set, pop out of molds and enjoy!

Notes

Gummy bears take about 15 minutes to set in the refrigerator. If you use larger shapes or deeper molds allow extra time to set. You can place them in the freezer to speed up set time, but watch them closely so that they don't freeze through.
